  • Union des association culturelles Sérère (and Radio Ndef Leng)

Tel: +221 8640129
E-mail: babacardiouf@yahoo.fr

Information: The  Union des association culturelles Sérère  was created in 1994. In 1996 it was recognised as a non-governmental organisation. Similar to what the Seereer Resource Centre does, it was created in order to promote the languages of the Seereer people and their culture. It's other objective is to assist Seereer communities through its network of 43 groups and associations working on Seereer cultural and socio-economic development. In 1999, the Union and its associations decided to start a community radio station (Radio Ndef Leng) in order to resolve the lack of access to means of communication by some of these associations. In April 2001, their application to commence a community radio station was accepted by the Ministry of Information in Senegal, and on 19th July 2001, they made their first live radio broadcast.

Radio Ndef Leng's programmes include a mixture of on-air debate and educational programmes in the Seereer languages.  It has 3500 members in its listeners club, and over 100 people involved in programme making. It is run on a voluntary basis, and it is the leading broadcast service for the Seereer speaking community in Dakar. It's application to open a second station in Fatick was accepted. The success of Radio Ndef Leng "is linked closely to its roots in a respected Sérère  cultural association and the interest in the Sérère  speaking community of having a community radio that reflects their language and culture." [i] Babacar Diouf is its Director.
______________

  • Association des Paysans de Tukar (APT) - (This Association is no longer active)

Information: The Association des Paysans de Tukar is in the historical and  sacred village of Tukar (in the precolonial Kingdom of Siin).  It was setup in 1986 by a group of young and university educated Seereer men and women to combat poverty and disease, increase employment and empowerment after the unprecedented poor soil fertility in the Siin during the 1970's and 80's and the devastating outbreak of cholera in Siin in 1986 - which was the catalyst for the founding of this Association.  Following the poor soil fertility in Siin, these youths left for Dakar and other urban areas to find a better life. However, the Senegalese drought in the 1980's, and lack of employment and investment also affected city life. As a result, these Seereer youths decided to go back to Tukar and established an Association, mainly motivated by a desire to created a better life for themselves, their families and the people of Tukar, as well as creating something within Tukar (their place of origin), also partly motivated by frustration with city life and the desire not to marry non-Seereers in such cosmopolitan areas of Senegal. The  cholera outbreak in 1986 triggered these Seereer youths to pull their resources together and combat the disease in Tukar through education. Their collaborative effort helped safe many lives and eradicate the disease from Tukar. It was just after the cholera crisis that the APT was formed. The APT collapsed in 2002 partly due to lack of government investment in the Siin by successive governments since the end of colonialism, starting with Senghore's administration who took for granted the Seereer vote by virtue of being a Seereer, but failed to invest in the Siin. The Association also collapsed because its Secretary General who was one of the original founders was accepted in an American university and he had to leave. Many of the original founders also got older and got married with responsibilities. There was no one else to revive hence its collapsed.
